PICAC Alliance welcomes establishment of Multicultural Aged Care Unit in Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care

The Government is creating a Multicultural Aged Care Unit within the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care to develop a culturally sensitive aged care sector. This unit will engage with multicultural communities to ensure inclusive and respectful care for all.

This initiative is a welcomed response to the recommendation from the Multicultural Framework Review, which examined Australia’s multicultural society and suggested changes to laws, policies, and institutional settings. The review received 796 submissions leading to 29 recommendations. The PICAC Alliance has actively promoted and encouraged other organisations to compile and contribute their submissions. The PICAC voice was a strong one, as most PICAC Alliance members submitted their responses as well.

This is timely, given the PICAC Alliance’s recent advocacy to the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care for the development of a National Multicultural Aged Care Strategy. The establishment of the Multicultural Aged Care Unit signifies a major step towards inclusive aged care, demonstrating the government’s commitment and investment to provide better support and care for seniors from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The PICAC Alliance fully endorses the establishment of a Multicultural Aged Care unit and stands ready to work with the Government to closely collaborate with the newly established unit.
